I am really interested in the shape of clothes. I think a lot about how clothes look and the way they hang. I look at people and the clothes they wear for inspiration, but I am also really inspired by Japanese clothes. I like the shapes that they use in their clothes. I’ve never been to Japan, but it is such a thoughtful culture, with a strong emphasis on beauty.
From what I have seen, the shapes of Japanese clothes are simple, boxy and cropped. Their clothes are practical, easy to wear, and look so beautiful. My designs are mainly boxy, with ¾ length sleeves and waistline and ¾ length cropped trousers. These shapes seem to suit all body shapes and are so easy to layer. And when these shapes are teamed with beautiful, hard-wearing fabrics, like twill and denim; it’s a match made in heaven.
Everyday Japanese clothes tend to be based around block colours like navy, black and white, with kimonos for colour and pattern. I love to throw vintage fabrics into the mix. I always use 100% cotton wherever I possibly can. Originally used to make curtains / cushions, these fabrics are beautifully patterned and last a lifetime.
They can be tricky to come by, so I do use a lot of denim and twill deadstock fabric too, which I also love. Like the indigo denim in this cropped hi-neck top, with it's 3/4 length sleeves and lovely big pockets.
